The UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library is having an exhibit and Open House reception showcasing newly acquired Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Artifacts. The event is Tuesday November 14, 2006 at 4pm in the 4th Floor Rare Book Room.
RSVPS are required by November 7th to Teresa Johnson, tgj<at>library.ucla.edu.
Here's the link: http://www.library.ucla.edu/biomed/his/medicalclassics.html.
If you're going, we can all meet outside the IS building at 3:45pm and walk over together.  This should be really fun!

SAA is excited to announce that we have been invited to the Seaver Center for a FREE tour! The tour is set for Friday, December 1st at 10am.
The Seaver Center is part of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and houses their two-dimensional archival materials relating to "history of the trans-Mississippi West with special emphasis on Southern California and Los Angeles." For more information about the Seaver Center, you can look here: http://www.nhm.org/research/history/seaver_center.html.
In addition to getting a tour, we will have free admission to the Museum, the California Science Center, and their Rose Garden. FYI, the Seaver Center is also offering a paid internship for next quarter.
Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 28th. Even though the tour and admission will be free, parking will not (boo!). So, we are encouraging people to carpool.  We will meet on campus in front of the IS building at 9am.

WINTER QUARTER:

You don't have a sweetheart for Valentine's Day? Well, sorry, we can't help you there, BUT we can provide you with lots of Valentine's day sweets!
SAA is sponsoring a bake sale on Valentine's Day in the Student Commons. The sweets will be priced between $.50 and $1.00 and will available from 9am until we are sold out. A can will be there to collect the money, EVERYONE WILL BE ON THE HONOR SYSTEM. So start saving your change and get ready to enjoy some great Valentine's Day treats.

We've all been there to enjoy the artwork and architecture (or if you haven't you should take advantage of this chance), now its time to learn more about the Institute behind the Museum.
Join SAA on Friday February 16th at 3:30pm for a tour of the Getty Institutional Records and Archives (led by Institutional Archives Manager Nancy Enneking) to find out more about:
-the collections of the Getty Institute
-archival processing
-how records end up in the Getty Institutional Archives
-electronic records
...and any other burning questions you have about the Getty.
http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/institutional_archives/scope.html.
The tour will take approximately an hour; however the Getty is open until 9pm so people will be able to walk around after the tour. (First Years: carpooling will be easy as we can leave together directly after 260).
We'll be meeting in front of the IS building at 3pm on the 16th (or whenever the 260 class gets out) and carpooling to the Getty. There are 24 of us and 6 drivers.

Time to put on your mouse ears... and join SAA for a tour of the Walt Disney Archives at the Disney Studios in Burbank!
Dave Smith, Chief Archivist and founder of the Walt Disney Archives, will be our host.  You can learn more about him at this link: http://disney.go.com/vault/read/dave_smith.html.
The powers that be at Disney have requested that no more than 15 students be present on the tour, but have agreed to host us on two different days so that more students would be able to participate. This means that you must RSVP.
The days of the tour are:
Tuesday, February 27th at 11am
Wednesday, March 7th at 11am
Dave Smith estimates that the tour will last about an hour and a half. Archivist Brian Hoffman also will speak about technical issues affecting the archives. Then, following the tour, he has invited us to have lunch at the Disney Commissary.
So, come along and sing a song and join the jamboree!

SPRING QUARTER:

For those attending the Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting next week in Long Beach, SAA@UCLA would like to coordinate carpools.
A general meeting will be held May 16th, Wednesday at 1:00 in the Student Commons.
