Events of 2002-2003:
FALL QUARTER
Build site and contact list for future chapter members. Tour of the Autry Institute for the Study of the American West at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. Elections for Vice President! Two teams of two run for vice president!!!! Our student chapter numbers blossom. New archives students interested in all aspects of archives work, from museums to corporations. We re-register with the school as an official Student Organization and write a new statement of purpose. We start a checking account with the UCLA Credit Union.
WINTER QUARTER
"Archives in Context Tour." The Student Chapter enjoyed a day in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park, where we received a special docent tour of the Charles Lummis Home (current home of the Southern California Historical Society) and later received an insightful tour from Kim Walters of the Braun Research Center at the Southwest Museum, which houses the Lummis archives, manuscripts, photographs, books, wax cylinders, and objects. BAKE SALE!!! We held a very successful bake sale to raise funds for a UCLA Student Chapter sponsored reception at the SAA Annual Conference. We featured a "spotlight on archives," in keeping with the annual conference theme. Our topic: The Hemingway Archives in Cuba. This educational component is designed to spread archives awareness throughout the IS department. We hope to "spotlight" lesser known archives on campus (which may be sites for future internships) and other archives in the greater Los Angeles area for upcoming bake sales.
SPRING QUARTER
Bake Sale and "Mapping the Future" event. Field trip to NARA in Laguna Niguel.
AMENDMENTS
After our election for Vice President in October, we amended our constitution to expand voting options to include e-mail voting. We also amended our constitution to include an Information Officer position to handle all aspects of web authoring and updating in collaboration with the other student officers. We hope to have our web site become a more dynamic, reliable resource for current and prospective archives students at UCLA. We will hold elections for this position in the Spring.
THE FUTURE
In addition to Annual Conference activities here in Los Angeles, our student chapter hopes to possibly work with Cal State Fullerton (part of the San Jose State program), which just formed a Student Chapter. We are interested in planning joint panels and projects together in the future to expand our educational and networking opportunities. We hope to sponsor a workshop on grant writing for archivists. We hope to invite a leader(s) in the field to speak with our students about the "real world:" jobs, qualifications, interview process, etc. This outlines our significant student chapter activities. I hope this is helpful to SAA. Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, I have distributed the Student Chapter Surveys, which I will return as soon as they are collected at our next meeting. |
