REFORMA - Los Angeles Chapter Homepage

We are the Los Angeles Chapter of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. Nationally, REFORMA is committed to the improvement of the full spectrum of library and information services for the more than 40 million Spanish-speaking and Latino people in the U.S.

Established in 1971, REFORMA has actively sought to promote the development of library collections to include Spanish language and Latino-oriented materials; the recruitment of more bilingual and bicultural professionals and support staff; the development of library services and programs which meet the needs of the Spanish-speaking and Latino communities; the establishment of a national network among individuals who share our goals; the education of the U.S. Latino population in regards to the availability and types of library services; and lobbying efforts to preserve existing library resource centers serving the interests of Latinos.

In addition to the LOS ANGELES CHAPTER, there are now 26 REFORMA chapters, including four chapters in the state of California. These chapters function autonomously, working through their area library systems and state library associations to achieve local objectives.

The association awards several scholarships per year to graduate library school students who express interest in working with the Latino community. Other activities that benefit the membership include: the publication of the REFORMA Newsletter and facilitation of the REFORMANET listserv, and programs and workshops which focus on serving the Spanish-speaking and Latino communities.

REFORMA is a non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia and is classified as a 501 (c)3 organization by the Internal Revenue Code. New members of all backgrounds and communities are always welcome.
