Position Summary: The Apollo Theater established its Archive in 2006 and has worked to preserve video, audio, photography, and records from its 83-year legacy as a touchstone for African Americans and “the Soul of American Culture”. As a not-for-profit arts organization with an iconic history as a commercial theater, the Apollo Archives present a unique challenge. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the Apollo seeks to ensure that its Archive is preserved, digitized, and made available to the public. The Digital Archivist will report to the Associate Producer and will provide project management for this Phase 1 Archive Project. The position is a full-time two-year grant funded position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Cataloguing the collection, prioritize content for preservation, identifying systems and software for short- and long-term use
Manage the digitization/metadata process for the initial subset of the collection, establish and manage workflows
Hiring and supervising consultants/vendors
Developing an Archival strategy for this and future phases, clarifying and researching rights/licensing issues
Identifying potential opportunities for use of the collection

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
MLS from an American Library Association-accredited program, an MA in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation, or other similar advanced degree.
At least 3 years of related work experience in digital archives, museums, or libraries, and demonstrated interest in and knowledge of African American music, art, and cultural history.

Required Competencies:
Demonstrated knowledge of: digitization workflows and standards; metadata and archival description standards; and intellectual property, copyright, and privacy issues related to digital collections.
Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills
Supervisory experience
Project management experience
