Looking to advance your career in the area of Special Collections? Binghamton University, ranked 37th in the country for public universities by U.S. News & World Report, is looking for a creative and energetic librarian to fill the dynamic role of Head of Special Collections.

Binghamton University Libraries Special Collections collects, preserves and provides access to materials that enhance, support and encourage the research, learning, teaching and participation in academic programs of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and scholars both at Binghamton University and in the region, state, nation and world. Collections include rare books, personal papers, monographs, manuscripts, artwork, artifacts, electronic resources, AV, and photographs. Areas of collecting within Special Collections include the Binghamton University alumni literature and alumni authors; Binghamton University faculty publications and papers; local history; rare books including early European, English, and American imprints, local and regional imprints, facsimiles, limited editions and examples of fine printing, bindings, and illustrations; performing arts and fine arts such as the Max Reinhardt Archives & Library, the Peter Wexler Collection and the Tilly Losch Collection; Kurdish, Armenian and Ukrainian oral history as related to existing collections or areas related to academic programs at the University.

Duties and Responsibilities include:
Hires, supervises, trains, mentors and evaluates Special Collections faculty, professional and clerical staff. Cultivates a culture of innovation and continuous improvement and fosters the ongoing growth and professional development of the department's professional and support staff.
Establishes priorities through strategic planning and creates policies and procedures; makes resource allocations for the department and monitors budget, analyzes statistics, develops reports and documentation for senior management.
Responsible for collection development, management, on-site and digital access, information and research services, scholarly communication, digital initiatives and reference service for Special Collections and University Archives.
Collaborates with Head of Digital Initiatives & Resource Discovery in developing an effective and achievable strategy to establish a cohesive digital access program ensuring the long-term viability of university digital assets regardless of format.
Expands awareness of Special Collections through exhibits, both traditional and virtual, publications, instructional programs, presentations and lectures, and other activities. Works closely with faculty, students, alumni and others in the wider community to interpret the collections and promote an understanding of their value to teaching and scholarship.
Works with the Libraries' Development officer to identify, apply for and implement grants useful to Special Collections. Works effectively with potential donors to Special Collections.
Represents and promotes Binghamton University Libraries Special Collections in local, statewide, national and international organizations.
May serve as subject liaison between the Libraries and assigned departments. Assess, develop and manage the collections, subject web pages and electronic resources in support of teaching and research for subject areas as assigned.

Requirements:
ALA accredited MLS.
Supervisory experience.
Two years of appropriate post-MLS professional experience working with Special Collections, archival, or museum collections.
Demonstrated knowledge of Special Collections practices, issues, and emerging trends.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a Special Collections program at an academic or research library.
Experience with issues related to various digital formats, media and migration.
Experience in evaluating workflows and successfully designing or enhancing production-oriented work processes.
Experience applying for grants, and planning and managing grant-funded projects.
Knowledge of German, French, Italian or Turkish.
