Position available August 2012.

Duties and Responsibilities

The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Library is a rapidly changing environment and its Archivist Librarian is expected to develop expertise with emerging technologies, lead and/or participate in innovative library projects.

Under the general direction of the Head of the Archives & Manuscripts Department, this position will primarily oversee all aspects of the Congressional Political Papers and other archival collections as assigned.

The Archivist will work in a team environment that incorporates innovation and new technologies to manage collections and serve the user.

This position is responsible for effective outreach to instructional faculty that will encourage them to incorporate archival, primary-source research materials in their curricula.

This position will appraise, arrange and describe archival and manuscript collections according to national standards.

This position will participate in the development and implementation of the Library’s archival management open-source software.

This position provides specialized information services, including reference and research consultation, to students, faculty and members of the community via e-mail, person-to-person, chat or other modalities.

And to collaborate in developing and implementing digital preservation polices based on best practices and national/professional standards.

Knowledge of archival processes and standards.

Librarian II Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in archival science or a Masters degree in library science, information science, history, or public history with an emphasis in archival science.

Librarian III Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in archival science or a Masters degree in library science, information science, history, or public history with an emphasis in archival science.

Three years of appropriate professional experience at a college, university or research organization, or equivalent.

and

Twenty-four credits of post-baccalaureate course work, preferably in a humanities or social science field.

Librarian IV Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in archival science or a Masters degree in library science, information science, history, or public history with an emphasis in archival science.

Seven years of appropriate professional experience at a college, university or research organization, or equivalent.

and

A second Masters Degree, preferably in a humanities or social science field.

Desirable Qualifications

Professional archival experience in a manuscript repository or archives located at an academic or research library.

Proficiency in the use and configuration of archival collection management systems (such as the Archivists' Toolkit or Archon) and strong understanding of relational databases (e.g. MySQL).

Proficiency with DACS, EAD, MARC, LCSH, authority control, and other data content and structure standards relevant to the archival control.

Knowledge of standards related to electronic records, digital imaging, digital objects, and metadata.

Working knowledge of a variety of digital content formats and standards (e.g. XML, jpg, PDF).

Experience using social media and/or online instructional applications (such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, Blackboard, Sakai, LibGuides).

Ability to lift and carry a 40-pound box, climb a ladder to retrieve materials, and push a heavy book truck.
