As the lead administrator of the University libraries, the University librarian will set the standard of intellectual engagement and accomplishment for the Universityís libraries, archives, and special collections.
Working with talented and accomplished faculty and staff, the University Librarian will provide vision, strategic direction, and operational leadership to meet the Universityís educational Christian mission and ambitious goals for growth. The University Librarian will create an environment that ensures the highest quality and effectiveness in service. Supporting the Universityís research mission, the University Librarian will help advance the scholarly activities of the faculty, including supporting interdisciplinary opportunities. He or she will also assure that the libraries play a strong role in supporting faith integration. The University Librarian will be the public voice of the libraries, promoting initiatives within Azusa Pacific University, in the City of Azusa, and across the state and region. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Graduate Programs and Research, this person will work collaboratively with senior administrators and academic leaders across the University.
The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized, entrepreneurial, Christian scholar with demonstrated success as a leader committed to the search for knowledge, a deep understanding of the needs of a research university, strong experience as a seasoned administrator, and the ability to imagine new possibilities for APUís libraries, archives, and special collections.
Manage and coordinate the University Librariesí programs, facilities, and operations to meet the needs of the university community; champion the library as an intellectual meeting place.
Provide direction for the Universityís learning resources and academic support programs in library services and information competency/literacy.
Provide leadership for the Teacher Librarian Credential and Masterís Degree in Education in Library Science programs.
Supervise faculty and staff in the development and maintenance of mission-centered programs and services; ensure compliance with university personnel policies, procedures, and practices for the employment of library faculty, staff, student employees and temporary employees.
Manage financial resources consistent with university policy, setting priorities for various resource needs, providing program analyses, and participating in strategic and long-range planning for the University.
Lead the development of policy, as necessary, for the university to implement, evaluate, augment and respond to outreach and non-traditional programs and services and needs for Azusa Pacific University and its regional campuses, as well as University College (the online institution of the Azusa Pacific University System).
Work closely with the Grants Office and applicable stakeholders in developing proposals for grants and contract support.
Support community outreach programs such as Keeping History Alive, Bringing STEM to Life, History Day LA, Math Field Day, and the STEM Day at APU event.
Continue to develop the special collections and provide museum exhibits for Azusa Pacific University community and the surrounding communities of Southern California.
Continue to grow collaboration and relationships with organizations including SCELC, OCLC, EBSCO, SpringShare, Innovative Interfaces, the Museum of the Bible, and other organizations with products or services, as appropriate.
Maintain currency of knowledge of legal requirements and academic regulations that impact department programs, operations, and service; support and participate in university-wide and discipline specific accreditation efforts.
With a focus on system integration, direct and coordinate the introduction of new technologies that leads to simplicity with integrity between holdings management, discovery platforms, and patron accessibility.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
May be needed to work at alternative Regional Campuses or Sites.
Knowledge of computer and web based technologies relevant to Library/Learning Resources.
Must be sensitive to and have an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural ethnic backgrounds of employees and students, and of persons with disabilities.
On-line and in person classroom teaching experience required as well as significant experience with bibliographic and reference instruction and information literacy.
Must have a firm understanding of the principles of administration, supervision, and budgeting within a library and learning resources environment.
Experience assessing and evaluating programs and personnel; experience with complex budgets
Effective oral and written communication.
Work cooperatively and collaboratively with others; demonstrated experience developing consensus among a diverse range of interests, and maintaining effective working relationships.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Experience in managing multi-department budgets.
Experience with accreditation, new technologies, community outreach programs, archives, and special collections.
Combined experience in both an academic discipline and library science.
Demonstrated success hiring, leading, and managing academic librarians and staff.
Demonstrated knowledge of library trends.
Education and Experience:
Requires a Master's degree in Library Information Sciences or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution and a second masterís degree or a doctorate degree. Candidates should also have at least five full-time years of post-secondary leadership experience or equivalent in academic librarianship.
Workload: Full-time, 12-month administrative position with a concurrent appointment as a faculty member.
