New York University seeks a forward-looking, creative and thoughtful leader to become Library Director for its NYU Abu Dhabi portal campus. The Library of NYU Abu Dhabi delivers and coordinates a wide range of academic services that support the research, teaching and learning of NYU Abu Dhabi’s faculty and students. Drawing on the resources and infrastructure of the libraries at NYU New York, leadership of the NYU Abu Dhabi Library provides an opportunity to develop a forward-looking 21st century library program serving a culturally diverse and academically talented population. The Director of the NYU Abu Dhabi Library provides leadership for an interdisciplinary, collaborative and central source of intellectual and technological resources for cutting edge research and transformative teaching across over 20 undergraduate majors and an expanding offering in graduate programs. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead an emerging intellectual enterprise with a talented staff and established habits of innovation. The Director of the NYU Abu Dhabi Library works closely with colleagues in New York and NYU Shanghai on services that optimize library staff and resources across the NYU Libraries and with the senior staff of NYU Abu Dhabi to plan and implement emerging programs. The incumbent will be based in Abu Dhabi, with some travel required to NYU New York. The position reports jointly to the Provost of NYUAD and the Dean, Division of Libraries at NYU.
New York University has established itself as a Global Network University, a multi-site, organically connected network encompassing key global cities and idea capitals. The network has three degree-granting campuses - New York, Shanghai and Abu Dhabi - complemented by 11 additional academic centers across five continents. Faculty and students circulate within the network in pursuit of common research interests and cross-cultural, interdisciplinary endeavors, both local and global. Working across the network, NYU Libraries are highly integrated and collaborative. NYU Libraries’ shared mission across the globe is to be closely integrated, collaborative and focused on the faculty/student experience globally. The libraries share resources and its staff collaborates extensively to provide seamless access to resources, services, and expertise globally.
Takes primary responsibility for the strategic planning, coordination and implementation of library services and policies at NYU Abu Dhabi in conjunction with NYU New York Division of Libraries counterparts, including collection development, technical services, research and instructional services, public programs, academic technology and audio-visual services, access services, and facilities.
Provides leadership for the Library’s innovative Center for Digital Scholarship, Archives and Special Collections, and major projects including local responsibility for the University’s Arabic Collections Online digital collection.
Contributes to NYU Abu Dhabi campus and program planning and ongoing program development.
Recruits, develops and manages an outstanding library staff, and provides direction for the continuing recruitment, selection, orientation, development, training and retention of library staff. Takes a leading role in mentorship of NYUAD’s Library Faculty.
Leads the effective and efficient ongoing operation of all aspects of library service on the NYU Abu Dhabi campus consistent with the mission and service philosophy of NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York.
Develops and manages the NYU Abu Dhabi library budget.
Leads the development of print and digital collections, including participation in joint NYU-wide collection development, budgeting, acquisitions and processing.
Develops productive relationships and collaborations with the Emirati academic and research community. Advances the NYUAD Library’s place among Emirati research institutions.
Substantial knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic library and information services, instructional/information technologies, and scholarly communication.
Knowledge of developments in higher education that affect research libraries, scholarly process, and the University’s core mission in research, teaching, and learning.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with the Provost’s Office, the academic Deans and faculty to sustain and develop innovative Library programs suited to the research and teaching of NYUAD and to share an in-depth understanding of academic programs.
Strong commitment to service excellence.
Demonstrated creativity in leadership.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in implementing innovative user services and technologies in the library program.
Demonstrated experience in assessment, planning and program development.
Ability to work with others in a team environment and communicate complex issues and perspectives to project team representatives across a global network.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent.
Minimum 5 years successful administrative experience and at least 8 years managing and/or supervising a department in an academic setting, including budget and management of professional personnel.
Second advanced degree in a subject taught at NYUAD
Experience in a research university library
Experience working in a culturally diverse environment
Prior international experience
Interest in and awareness of the Middle East, from a professional or scholarly standpoint.
