SUNY Libraries Consortium (SLC) seeks an Executive Director for a unique opportunity to cultivate the alliances with the diverse and visionary network of libraries within SUNY. The SLC is a new independent organization, formed to implement the vision of the member libraries of the Consortium and support SUNY students, faculty, researchers and staff to advance the intellectual and economic development of New York State.


Salary: commensurate with qualifications and experience

Work Location: Binghamton University

The Executive Director provides dynamic, experienced executive leadership for the SLC, builds on the deep history and tradition of library cooperation across SUNY, extends the rich information resources, and enhances the skill and dedication of information professionals across the system. In addition, the Exective Director:

Executes the vision articulated by the Board, manages, and coordinates the operations of the Consortium

Reports to the Board of Directors of the SUNY Libraries Consortium, which represents the Directors, Deans and Leaders of the 64 institution libraries and their faculty and staff

Sustains the SLC as a vital consortium that is a leader in library resource sharing and the application and development of information services and technologies

Responsibilities include:

In collaboration with the Board of Directors, provide vision and strategic leadership for the organization

Manage and execute daily operations of the consortium, including focusing, empowering, and holding membership teams accountable for achieving their goals

Oversee the development of the budget and financial management of the consortium. Consult with the SUNY Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) on membership billing. Make regular financial reports to the SLC Board of Directors. Provide financial reports to membership as directed by the Board

Identify and guide the development of new services and programs to meet the evolving needs of the membership

Consult and communicate regularly with the SLC Board of Directors and membership of SLC and provide timely and comprehensive reporting on the activities of the consortium

Ensure that the Board is presented with a broad range of stakeholder perspectives

Represent SLC in person and in communications with a broad range of constituencies including OLIS

Represent the needs of the SLC to state officials and agencies, the higher education community and other stakeholders

Plan programming, face-to-face and online for members of the board, committees and membership

Travel to regional locations for meetings and events

Build a culture of commitment to participating in the SLC

Supervise any directly reporting staff hired by the SLC

Other duties as assigned by the Board



Bachelor's degree required; MLS or MSLIS or recognized international equivalent strongly preferred

3 to 5 years progressive experience in an academic library

Professional experience in a leadership position requiring organizational skills and attention to detail

Experience leading organizational strategic planning and visioning initiatives, with documented successful impact on organizational outcomes

Fluency in commonly used organizational productivity tools (such as virtual meeting/webinar tools, document and file management, collaborative document creation and sharing, and data analysis/budgeting software).

Budgeting experience

Demonstrated ability to: work with library staff at various levels; work independently; communicate effectively and work efficiently under pressure; plan and coordinate meetings; build partnerships

Experience with developing and implementing assessment plans with diverse constituencies

Desired Qualifications

MBA or other additional advanced degree in a relevant administrative or entrepreneurial leadership area

Demonstrated ability to build partnerships within SUNY, including the libraries, information technology, faculty organizations and OLIS.

Demonstrated experience in a library consortia organization reporting to a board

Successful individual and multi-institutional grant writing experience

Project Management Experience or Certification
