The Mercyhurst University Archivist will direct the preservation and overall management of the University Archives and Special Collections along with the overall management of the Thomas J. & Michele Ridge Collection. The University Collections contain a wealth of primary source material pertaining to important documents, institutional records, ephemera and realia about the University. The Ridge Collection contains material pertaining to important public policy matters covering Governor Ridge's time in office, along with extensive resources pertaining to First Lady Michelle Ridge's commitment to and involvement with a number of important issues affecting the lives of Pennsylvanians.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A full-time, twelve-month position, the Archivist will oversee the management of the University Collection, ultimately ensuring its professional preservation and accessibility to students, faculty, scholars and the public who wish to expand their knowledge of the University. This individual is responsible for organizing, processing, cataloging, and preserving these, by means of Archives Space the university archival information management system. S/he will create finding aids using Encoded Archival Description, and develop a strategy for selecting materials for digitization and creating online access to select portions of the Collection. The Archivist will teach one course every other year in Archives/Archival Management for Mercyhurst ' s Public History program and work with faculty in History and other appropriate departments to develop research/capstone project, internship, and practicum opportunities for undergraduate students. The Archivist will report to the Director of University Libraries and provide periodic reports on the progress of archiving the Collection.
Assists in supervision of student employees and interns who process collections.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Undergraduate degree followed by a postgraduate qualification recognized and accredited by the Archives and Records Association (ARA) or Masterís Degree in Archives or Library Science or related field with six months to one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must also have current ACT 153 child abuse clearances.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ArchivesSpace or similar archives information management system, Database software; Internet software; Inventory software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Must be able to type at least 20wpm.
The work takes place in office and collection storage areas.
