The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) offers beautiful public service spaces supporting reading room research, group studies, and media-enhanced classrooms as well as a modern gallery. SCRC collections include the Library's holdings of rare books from the beginning of Western printing to the present, the John Crerar collection in the history of science and medicine, the Rosenberger Library of Judaica, medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, modern manuscripts, the Chicago Jazz Archive, and the professional papers and administrative records of the University of Chicago Archives. The Head of Research and Instruction is responsible for providing leadership for Special Collections research and learning programs, and actively engaging a broad audience of scholars, students, collectors, and donors.
Reporting to the Director of Special Collections, the Head of Research & Instruction (HRI) is responsible for the design, delivery, and assessment of innovative methods of research and teaching with special collections. Provides high quality instruction to diverse audiences of scholars, students, and visitors. Collaborates with faculty and other library and campus partners to develop strategies utilizing information technologies for Special Collections materials. Develops and maintains knowledge of information literacy standards, instructional practice, teaching methodologies, and instructional tools. Provides reference services for specialized areas. Manages the Special Collections reader services unit and provides leadership in maintaining high standards for research and teaching services. Supports new ways to engage the campus and community with Special Collections materials.
The successful candidate must have a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution, and a minimum of five years of full-time experience providing public services in a special collections repository to a diverse clientele. Demonstrated experience teaching with special collections and commitment to promoting the appreciation and use of special collections materials to a variety of audiences. Applicants should indicate that they have understanding of the significance of original sources and the nature and value of primary materials for research, teaching, and learning.
Desired qualifications include experience with or demonstrated knowledge of digital collections, social media tools, and digital humanities concepts and techniques; experience in curating exhibitions; success in developing creative public programming; and experience with the Aeon request system.
The Committee will evaluate candidates' records and professional accomplishments to determine their knowledge of rare books, manuscripts, and archives; knowledge of bibliographic cataloging, archival finding aids, and other access tools; knowledge of non-English languages; experience in providing course-integrated instruction and public presentations; experience in providing public services and reference; experience with digitization of special collections; ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, faculty and students, and donors; and communications skills.
