History Liaison and Reference Librarian for Collections, Research and Instruction – Georgetown University Library

The Georgetown University Library is an agile organization that respects the heritage of the past while anticipating the requirements of the 21st century. By providing preeminent services, collections and spaces, the Library shapes the creation of knowledge, conserves culture for posterity, and transforms learning and research.

The History Liaison and Reference Librarian serves as the Library’s principal liaison to faculty, graduate and undergraduate students whose work centers in the history of the United States and Western Europe and African American Studies and other subjects as assigned. Reporting to the Head of Collections, Research and Instruction, the History Liaison and Reference Librarian has duties that include but are not limited to:

Reference

Answers research questions of students, faculty, and other library users at the reference desk and by phone, e-mail, virtual reference software, or appointment.
Determines patron's research need and identifies and locates appropriate information sources.
Instructs patron in the use of online and print sources to identify relevant research material – including those in Special Collections.
Recommends alternative research approaches and directs patrons to sources outside the library as necessary.
Manages reference collection in assigned subject areas; recommends relevant materials for purchase; deselects materials deemed obsolete or superseded; and monitors standing orders.
Continually acquires knowledge of new reference resources and updates skills through self-education, continuing education opportunities, and professional development activities.

Instruction

Participates in the library research instruction program by promoting instruction in assigned areas and by preparing and teaching course-specific, individual, and other types of instruction sessions.
Collaborates with faculty when possible to plan sessions and create teaching materials related to course assignments and the library research instruction program’s curricular objectives.
Team-teaches sessions with faculty and librarians as needed.
Assesses student understanding of instruction sessions.
Communicates effectively with students and faculty, facilitates in-class discussion, and encourages active learning.
Uses a variety of means to deliver instructional materials within and outside of class (e.g., Blackboard, PowerPoint, and web authoring).
Understands key issues, trends, and ideas in instruction.
Conducts in-house training and workshops.

Collection Development

Selects materials in all formats, including, but not limited to: electronic journals, databases, datasets, print monographic materials, print serials, audiovisual materials, microformats, media, and occasionally assists with subject expertise for Special Collections.
Assesses and makes determinations on the disposition of gift materials.
Participates in retrospective collection development, as appropriate for selection area or as opportunities arise.
Develops an awareness of publishing trends for selection areas.
Works with faculty and graduate students in selected subject areas to learn more about their research and curricular needs, to keep them informed of the library’s activities, and to integrate library resources into their research and curricular activities.
Provides services to support the pedagogical and research needs of Georgetown’s various constituents.
Regularly reviews approval plan profiles, recommends modifications, and monitors the funds designated for those subject areas.
Participates in collection management-related activities (e.g., weeding, storage projects, electronic resources evaluation, and recommendations for purchase of expensive resources in all formats).

Requirements

Master’s in Library Science (MLS) accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent appropriate/equivalent advanced degree – preference for a second graduate degree in a history or African American Studies or the equivalent years of work and/or other equivalent expertise in this or other related fields
2+ years of experience or training in the provision of public services (reference and instruction) in an academic or research library setting
Demonstrated experience in discipline specific research methodologies
Ability to work with diverse, research-oriented students and faculty
Analytical ability, initiative, imagination, and excellent written and verbal communication skills
Broad-based interest in, and current awareness of, information technology applications for the delivery of library information
Willingness and availability to work scheduled hours at the Reference Desk including evenings, weekends, and holidays in rotation with other staff
