|Position||Special Collections Conservator|
|The UConn Library invites applications and nominations for the position of Special Collections Conservator. Under the general direction of the Head of Digital Imaging & Conservation, the Special Collections Conservator manages the work of the Conservation Lab, integrating its functions with those of other programs of the Archives & Special Collections, and performs a wide range of conservation treatments on special collections materials. The Conservator coordinates workflows for the digital production program for archives and special collections materials and provides advice on preservation policy for the Library.
The main 4,400-acre (17.8 km2) campus is set in a university town located in the rural heart of Connecticut; approximately a half hour's drive from Hartford, 90 minutes from Boston, and 3 hours from New York. Storrs offers New England village charm, with outstanding recreational facilities and open space initiatives, farm to table agricultural communities, and excellent public schools.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains a current awareness of conservation principles and practices as they apply to special collection materials across all formats and develops and tests new treatment procedures and approaches to problem solving.
Assesses the nature and condition of worn, damaged, fragile, and/or valuable collection materials to determine the best method for protection, treatment, housing, storage and display. Makes treatment decisions based on the condition of each item, and in consideration of the nature, size, and use patterns of the collection.
Independently performs conservation treatments and constructs housings using a variety of complex methods and techniques, which may require substantial modification to achieve reliable results or may require solving problems inherent with the methodology; calculates results, evaluates findings and determines need for further treatments across all formats.
Conducts condition surveys of special library collections, documents survey results, and develops broad treatment plans based on the size, nature, condition, and use patterns of the collections.
In coordination with the Head of Digital Imaging & Conservation, assesses the feasibility of proposed digital capture projects. Coordinates the preparation of materials for the transportation to and from the digital capture lab. Prepares materials for digital capture and performs condition evaluation and treatment of materials post-capture.
Prepares plans and procedures for proper handling, protection, and treatment of materials during emergencies. Coordinates Library staff response to emergencies per established guidelines.
Establishes environmental standards for collections.
Provides condition assessment and conservation treatment for Archives & Special Collection materials prior to loans and upon return from other institutions as needed.
Creates preservation and conservation policies and procedures to ensure the proper care of special collections and archival materials.
Responsible for the proper maintenance of laboratory conditions, safety procedures, equipment, instruments, supplies, furniture, files and records; and plans and implements changes in the daily operations of the Conservation Lab.
Prepares budgets, monitors expenditures selects and purchases supplies, tools and equipment for the Conservation Lab.
Maintains and makes available records and statistics to reflect productivity, workflow, and the special activities of the Conservation Lab.
Develops and maintains effective working relationships with suppliers and other preservation related vendors. Develops contracts for appropriate conservation and preservation services as appropriate.
Serves as a resource on preservation related planning and appropriate conservation treatments for the University community and other libraries.
Serves as student supervisor for the Conservation Lab.

Determines work assignments and provides feedback to each student employee.
Approves student timecards and resolves time reporting and/or student payroll issues in a timely manner.
Ensures student payroll expenditures remain within approved budget.
Maintains current student employee personnel records.
Adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the UConn Library Student Employee Handbook and the UConn Student Employment Guide.
This is a full time position based in Storrs with an anticipated start date of January, 2018. A graduate degree in conservation of archives and special collections and a minimum of two years post-graduate experience or a bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years post-graduate experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of the physical and chemical nature of cultural heritage materials; the history of book and papermaking; conservation principles and practices and their appropriate application; and conservation supplies, tools, equipment, vendors, and current technical standards and specifications.
Demonstrated knowledge of the organization and administration of cultural heritage collections including electronic content management systems.
Demonstrated leadership and excellent communication skills.
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to think strategically, be forward thinking, and embrace change.
Maintain currency through active and continuing involvement in professional activities at a statewide, regional and/or national level.
Demonstrated ability to maintain and trouble-shoot complex problems with lab equipment.
Willingness to travel and work a flexible schedule.
Masterís degree in conservation of archives and special collections and three to five years post graduate experience or a bachelorís degree and a minimum of eight or more years post-graduate experience.
Minimum of five years professional experience in conservation that includes training and supervision of personnel in a cultural heritage institution.
Experience managing a budget for a department, project, team or committee.
