New York Times Book Review House Style
A question has come up about house style and you should model the heading of your review upon the points below. Please note that you should also provide the word count for the body of the review proper (i.e., don't count the bibliographic information or reviewer biography).
Take a look at any recent issue
of the Sunday NYTBR for an example of their bibliographical
style, but let’s follow these rules:
1) Title is all caps, bold
2) By first name and then last name (underlined,
which is the signal to the printer to set in italic type)
3) Total pagination using ### pp. (underlined)
4) Publisher’s name in upper and lower
case letters, underlined
5) Price in US dollars (underlined)
6) Period at the end of each element
7) The reviewer is identified after the bibliographical information but
before the review, with the review by in bold upper and lower case, and the
first and last name of the reviewer in bold capital letters.
8) Note that everything thus far has been flush left.
9) Fuller contributor identification appears below a horizontal rule at the bottom of the page.
10) Be sure to double space your review throughout.
Obviously, “house” style varies from newspaper to
newspaper and journal to journal, but it is interesting to note what is
considered essential bibliographical elements…
