Study of collection development in all types of libraries and information centers. Includes analysis of information needs, criteria for selection, collection use evaluation, and resources for collection development.
By the end of the course, students will know:
How to assess a collection
How to write a collection development policy
Which criteria to consider when selecting various materials for a library collection
Which criteria to consider when weeding a collection

The standard grade is “B”. Above-standard work is characterized by: creativity/originality; greater depth of analysis than the assignments call for; above-average treatment of the assignment; and superior organizational and/or written skills in the presentation of the material. Students must attend at least 90% of the class meetings to achieve the maximum grade.
