APPLICATION GUIDELINES

All applicants must hold a MLS or MLIS degree. To apply to the PRAXIS program, an applicant will apply to the Post-MLS/MLIS at the UCLA Graduate Division web application http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu. The department code is 509, the program or degree to enter is CRT. Supplementary application information should be sent to:

Supplementary application information needed for the PRAXIS program are:

  1. statement of purpose. A statement (max. 3 pages) to include responses to the following 3 questions:
    • Describe your interest in relation to any of the 5 stated professional issues of PRAXIS. (see "About" page)
    • Describe how your participation in PRAXIS will enable you to transform library and information services and education in a multicultural society.
    • Describe a research topic or question that you might consider addressing if undertaking doctoral studies.
  2. resume
  3. three letters of recommendation
  4. two official transcripts from academic institutions you have attended beyond secondary school, and
  5. official GRE scores, if available (Note: it is not required that the applicant take the GRE for entrance into the PRAXIS Program.

Each applicant will be required to meet with either Dr. Clara Chu or Elizabeth Martinez at some point during the application process.

Applicants to the PRAXIS program who are concurrently applying to the PhD program in Information Studies (admission Fall 2003) or those who may wish to apply once in the PRAXIS program will be required to submit current (taken within the past five years) GRE scores, a new statement of purpose, with the student’s new goals and aspirations as well as evidence of academic/research writing. DEADLINES and DATES

  • Application deadline: Wednesday, November 13, 2002; 5:00 p.m. (complete application received)
  • Admissions decision: Friday, November 22, 2002
  • Program begins: Thursday, January 2, 2003
  • Program ends: Summer 2003

    Location: Richard J. Riordan Central Library, 630 West Fifth Street, Los Angeles 90071 (map). Conference Center across from the Literature Department on the third floor.
    Parking: available at the 524 South Flower Street Garage. Special validated parking rates are available only during Library service hours. Parking validation is available at the Library Information Desk (first floor), patrons can obtain validation upon presenting a LAPL library card. The validation is a white sticker with the LAPL logo that is affixed to the parking ticket. Saturday - Sunday $1.00 Flat rate.
