Meeting Minutes
UCLA STUDENT CHAPTER OF THE ASSOCIATION OF MOVING IMAGE ARCHIVISTS GENERAL MEETING November 15, 2001 Attendance 11/15: Bob Dirig, Christine F, Julio Vera, Yuko Kodama, Toshiko Niimi, Emily Carman Report on AMIA Conference in Portland, Oregon: There was much discussion and time spent on 16 mm and small gauge films. Bob and Christine sat on the education committee and reported that the committee is small enough that our student chapter could really have an influence and play an integral part in the committee. Panel ideas for next year's conference were discussed; ideas ranged from a panel for students and future employers to discuss future internships and expectations in the profession. Another idea is a panel discussing the issues of credentials for working in archives (as opposed to the current more apprenticeship situation). Heather Cleary has an idea for a panel discussing research projects that graduate students are working on, possibly both in a formal and informal session. Also discussed how Lisa Carter of Univ. of Kentucky is a good source for internships and help for MIAS students. The chapter also discussed having a session like this at UCLA to share research projects in the Winter or Spring quarter. And an idea for a UCLA chapter student conference was brought up but parent AMIA would need to contribute financially. Bob announced that the Treasurer position of the student chapter is now held by Christine Figueroa and the Webmaster is now held by Julio Vera. Planned Events: The trip to the Getty is planed for Thursday, December 4 at 10 am, contact Julio if attending. A Cataloging session with Martha Yee has been confirmed for Thursday Feb. 7, 1-3 pm. Bob is also working on a March field trip to a lab, digital session with Laura Smart, and a spring video presentation with Dan Einstein. Finally the idea for a winter quarter luncheon for moving image archive studies was expanded to invite other departments, like Women's Studies, Art History, Musicology, History, Comparative Literature, Languages, the Production/Screenwriters dept, etc. Bob showed an informational video about the workings of a film lab that he obtained from the conference.
