UCLA STUDENT CHAPTER OF THE ASSOCIATION OF MOVING IMAGE ARCHIVISTS GENERAL MEETING MONDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2000 The meeting was called to order at 5:15 pm Present: Olivia Solis, Kelly Wallace, Heather Sabin, Wendy Horowitz, Heather Cleary, Molly Fournier-Krill, Snowden Becker, Rose Roberto Oliva Solis opened the meeting by introducing the executive board: Olivia Solis, President Andrea Leigh, Vice President (in absentia) Kelly Wallace, Secretary Heather Sabin, Treasurer Oliva Solis reported on the status of the student chapter registration, including background on the formation of the chapter. Steven Ricci, Head of Research & Study at the UCLA Film & TV Archives is the Chapter Advisor. The Student Chapter Board drew up a constitution that has been approved by the AMIA Board of Directors. The AMIA Board has some questions regarding legal and/or financial liability. Olivia has spoken with Mike Cohn of the Student Programs Office at UCLA regarding this issue. The department chairs assume all responsibility. Olivia, Andrea Leigh, and Heather Sabin will attend a registration session October 23, 2000 at 3:30 pm. At that time they will pick up forms for the chairs of the Information Studies and Film and TV Departments to sign. The approval and participation of both departments is of utmost importance to the Board. The Student Chapter Board plans to mount a Web page and asked for any and all members' assistance in this effort. The UCLA Student Chapter is the first student chapter of AMIA. The chapter has already had an impact on AMIA in the form of a student membership rate. The organization is enthusiastic about the potential benefits from interaction between students and professional moving image archivists. AMIA is eager to assist our chapter, including providing guest speakers. AMIA membership forms were handed out to those in attendance. These forms include the student rate of $35.00, which was put into effect with the formation of the UCLA student chapter. The membership form available on the AMIA Web page does not yet include the student rate. The suggestion was made to meet every other week, at least during Fall Quarter as we try to get the Student Chapter up and running. Discussion was held regarding a better meeting time. First-year students in the MIS program cannot attend meetings at 5:00pm on Mondays because of a conflict with a core class. No consensus was reached. The secretary and president did not receive much feedback from interested members who could not attend regarding their availability. The possibility of Oliva Solis conducting an alternate meeting for those unable to attend the general meetings was discussed. Two separate meetings might separate first and second years, when the ideal is for everyone to get to know each other and work together. Another idea was to vary the times so that some members will be able to attend at least some of the meetings. A final decision on meeting times was put off until more information from members can be acquired. Olivia discussed the 2000 AMIA Conference to be held November 13-18 in Los Angeles. The Board made available to members a list of student volunteer opportunities. For each four hours shift, a student will receive one day complementary attendance. For three four-hour shifts, a student will receive complementary attendance for the entire conference. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of the workshops, symposium, tours and other events. Heather Sabin suggested that members share with each other which events they will be attending and arrange carpools when possible . The Student Chapter will hold a meeting during the conference with AMIA Board members. The date and time will be determined shortly. Wendy Horowitz volunteered to show some films from her personal collection as an event. The Chapter wants to schedule some events to attract members. The meeting was adjourned at 5:50 pm.
