Officers Meeting (Fall 2005)- Minutes

Officers Present:

Meeting time: 5:00 p.m.

• Introduction of officers, including new officers Vice-President Danielle Lackey, Secretary Candice Mack and Webmaster Han Nguyen

• What does the UCLA student chapter of ALA do?
• Just as the national chapter of ALA is dedicated to the professional development of librarians, we are dedicated to the professional development of library students via networking, bringing different speakers to campus, library tours, and other events.
• We are also here to facilitate any events that LIS students would like to initiate.

 

• Reach Out And Read! (RORA literacy program)
• Danielle is interested in this, follow up with outgoing VP Chris Shoemaker
• Possible faculty contacts are Cindy Mediavilla and Virginia Walter, or Etheline Whitmire
• Look into connecting with YALSA and their literacy program?
• Could also look at main ALA site to see what literacy programs could translate to the UCLA setting

 

• Finances
• Snack Sales:
• First 2 weeks of snack sales raised $101 (minus $44 initial investment.)
• Book Sale:
• In light of snack sales, may reconsider the ALA book sales, as last year the book sale only raised $200-$300 throughout the whole year, and many old readers are not being reused and/or the readings are available online.
• GSA funds:
• $2700 available for IS Department student organizations from the Graduate Student Association’s Social Science Council
• We cannot use GSA money for alcohol, but can use our own funds
• Becky will set up a meeting among student organization board members to see what funds are needed among the different groups
• Upcoming expenses:
• Speakers: ALA President Michael Gorman (reception) and City Librarian Fontayne Holmes (lunch)
• SGB’s End of Year Party
• Snack sales could possibly go towards sending a member of the student chapter to the ALA Conference in June.

 

• Networking
• More mixers
• Working more closely with other student organizations

 

• Events
• Nov. 10, A talk with Los Angeles City Librarian Fontayne Holmes, Thursday, 3 p.m., Room 111
• A light reception will follow in the commons
• Ms. Holmes has been the Los Angeles City Librarian since 2004 and will be sharing her unique perspective on public libraries.
• Possible Library Tours
• Cerritos Public Library, Westwood branch, or Santa Monica Public Library (opens Dec. 3)?
• Possible Career Development/Resume Workshop, in conjunction with other student organizations, in Winter quarter
• Potential participants: Sue Curzon from CSUN, head of Special Collections Vicki Steele, Tracy from Phoebe’s internship
• Possible mixers
• Have them on different days of the week to accommodate schedules
