Meeting called to Order at 12:35pm (Heather)

 

  • Explanation of Future Events:
    • Panels in Spring
      • Patriot Act - (Teresa) with a course on intellectual freedom being offered, this panel would be a good tie in
        • Asked if anyone knew potential speakers to contact
        • (Heather) is there even a need for this?
          • General consensus: YES, because classes do not cover this topic with enough depth
      • Publishing Panel - (Ajit)
        • (Beth) has LJ (Library Journal) contact that wants students perspective/contribution to the “next generation” column of magazine
        • (Shana) will go to PLA conference in Seattle and see what she can find out about putting together a publishing panel
    • Student Works Showcase ( Heather)

-Idea/project that will showcase independent student work

- Appeal to students to allow their work to be displayed

    • Outreach Librarianship
    • Book Review Writing Workshop
      • Professor Richardson requests dates to do this workshop
        • April 5 th-9 th (1 st week) perhaps?
        • Or after portfolios are due?
      • Action: send out an email to identify people who would be interested in this FIRST
    • Career Planning Job Fair

 

 

      • Plan to co-sponsor this event with other associations
      • This idea came up during a brainstorming session of the ALL-CLUB officers meeting
    • Tours (possible co-sponsor event also)
      • Horn Book will be going to the Huntington Library
      • ALE will be going to the Museum of Tolerance

 

  • Other Activities
    • Student chapter registry
    • Used textbook sale
      • VERY SUCCESSFUL to date
      • ACTION: publicize at END of WINTER quarter for textbook sale to be held during 1 st week of SPRING quarter
      • Problem: always more demand than supply
      • Possible Solutions:
        • Action: contact graduating students/alumni wanting to donate books by sending email to alumni list-serve.
        • Action: process of writing a letter to address the need to alumni to get their books
        • Establish an ANNUAL Textbook Grant
          • To promote/increase sales and donations
          • Action: VOTE to pass this grant and amend student chapter bylaws
            • BASIC OVERVIEW OF GRANT:
            • $50 grant in the form of a check to be awarded to any student who contributes to the book sale by donating books.
            • Purpose of grant is to promote overall sale of textbooks and to increase overall membership.
          • ACTION TAKEN: members read outline chapter for the grant
          • ACTION TAKEN: a re-write of grant to articulate that during the WINTER quarter an award would be given ONLY to donating participants.

    Ice Cream Float Fundraiser

    • An ice cream float/sundae sale (date TBD)
      • ACTION TAKEN: membership asked whether they would buy this product and subsequently at what price each should be sold. It was decided that “as long as its warm” people would buy them at $2-3 depending on the item.
    • BOOKS NOT BOMBS
      • A national day of Action in March (check for date)
      • Of interest to future and current librarians
      • ACTION: To perhaps promote this event to facilitate on-campus awareness/ advocacy for libraries
    • ELECTIONS
      • Elections to be held at the end of Spring quarter for positions of:
        • PRESIDENT
        • TREASURER
