Gary Strong
University Librarian, UCLA

Dr. Gary Strong will discuss the role of the academic library in the 21st century. The UCLA Library will be used as a case study to illustrate how an academic library will position itself to tackle the changing "information landscape.” Dr. Strong will draw from his work in the areas of intellectual property and information literacy, and from his achievements in empowering the community through library services.

David A. Tyckoson

David A. Tyckoson has been involved with reference service for 25 years and has written extensively about reference service and the reference interview. He has held positions at SUNY-Albany, Iowa State University, and Miami (Ohio) University and has also served at various times as an adjunct professor in the library schools at the University of Illinois and SUNY-Albany.

Fontayne Holmes
Los Angeles City Librarian

January 17, 2008

Fontayne Holmes, Class of ’66, is a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL), and was appointed city librarian in 2003. She has served as assistant city librarian and previously held positions as assistant director of branches, central library director, and director of library facilities. She also served as city librarian in South Pasadena.

Ms. Holmes will be speaking regarding her own professional career, as well the challenges and rewards of running a major metropolitan public library system. One of Ms. Holmes’ hallmark achievements has been her management of a $317 million program to refurbish and build branch libraries across Los Angeles. Ms. Holmes was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.

REFORMA is the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking. Mr. Ascencio will discuss the importance of getting involved in professional associations while still in school.

Ms. Burger has bolstered the support of the library through partnerships with community leaders and donors. She is a strong advocate for library access, civic engagement, higher salaries in librariandship and new library development.

Guest Lecture

Judith F. Krug

Officer of Intellectual Freedom

February 8, 2007

Ms. Krug helped found ALA's Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of individuals' right to choose their own reading materials. Ms. Krug received an honorary doctorate, Doctor of Humane Letters, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
