Academic Year 2004/05
Fall 2004 Meeting: October 20, 2004
Meeting started at 2:05 in the Commons.
In attendance were: Genevieve Feldman, Sadie Honey, Erica Tang, Meg O'Neill, Michael Jara, Kristin Marley, Clara Chu, Chris Shoemaker, Kristyne Hrdina-Moulton, Miriam Touchton, and Kathy Talley
Amy Tang announced the Reach Out and Read Aloud training that will be held Oct 21 at 3PM and asked people to RSVP to Beth Jacobsen at bjacobse@ucla.edu
Sadie Honey briefly covered the discussion at the Brainstorming session.
The ACT-L listserv was explained and directions given for how to subscribe.
Sadie Honey and Genevieve Feldman briefly outlined each of the projects that had been mentioned in the Brainstorming session, mentioning the contact person for each project. Anyone interested in helping with a project should get in touch with the contact person through ACT-L or directly. (See minutes from Brainstorm meeting for a list of projects and the contact person.)
Clara Chu explained the Horn Travel award that is available through the department. If we want to use it for Legislative Day then an application should be put in for it very soon.
Clara Chu mentioned two other organizations who are looking for volunteers and may be a project for ALE. The LA County Commission on Human Relations has a collection that needs organizing. A LA County Probation Camp for you has recently recieved a donated collection of materials and needs help cataloging them. A possible project would be to create guidelines for cataloging so that other volunteers could continue the project. She will post details for both of these opportunities to the ACT-L listserv.
Clara Chu also mentioned that a forum on Tolerance, which is a condensed version of what is normally a two day workshop put on by people from the Museum of Tolerance, is coming up.
There is a binder that is the "archive" of the group that is missing.
Another possible project is completion of the group's constitution.
It was agreed that we would hold one meeting per quarter.
Each person present then spoke briefly about what drew them to ALE. Overwhelmingly it was the community action aspect of the group that was attractive.
Clara Chu asked if people would be interested in another presentation about how to write book reviews. Last year Prof. Richardson held a workshop on the subject. She spoke briefly about Counterpoise and the opportunity for writing book reviews. There is interest in a workshop.

Present: Neal Axton, Langdon Faust, Genevieve Feldman, Sadie Honey, Andrea Hull, Alison Kelly
- ¤ Agenda
The meeting was started by agreeing upon a rough agenda: Discussion of the structure of ALE and the report from the IS 220 (Design of Library and Information Services) group, brainstorming about projects to undertake this year, and deciding who will speak at ITW/orientation/convocation and what the message will be - ¤ ALE Structure and IS 220 report
· The report from IS 220 suggests that the structure of ALE consist of a series of committees organized around different functions that the group undertakes.
· It was suggested that the people present at this brainstorming meeting could be considered the steering committee.
· It was suggested that we refer to ALE with its entire name, in emails, fliers etc, so that new and non-members know more about what it is.
· It was suggested that we have at least a contact person for each project or function, even if there isn't a formal committee.
· First year students should be encouraged to participate on each project so that there is continuity from year to year. - ¤ Potential Projects for the Year
- · Donation of books weeded from the Walters collection
Genevieve is weeding the Walters collection of childrens' books, the weeded books are available to be donated somewhere, possibly to homeless shelters, possibly to kids in need. Genevieve will head up this project to decide where the books should go. - · Information Issue Documentaries/Films
The IS 220 report suggested that showing documentaries pertaining to information issues would be a good activity for ALE - Neal will look into showing "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" early in the year - the evening of Oct 21 or 28 was suggested, a final time will be decided. Other suggested showings were "Farenheit 9/11", "Book Wars", "Bowling for Columbine", "Spellbound", Professor Lynch has a number of films pertaining to intellectual freedom issues - · Outreach Series
Langdon will look into putting together a series of speakers about outreach programs ALA may be interested in co-sponsoring this event - · Community Service/Learning
Sadie will look into starting a database of community organizations that would welcome students for class projects (i.e. a collection development project analyzing the collection at a homeless shelter). It was mentioned that Professor Chu wants to include community learning for the Diversity, Ethics, and Change class. It was suggested that it might be useful to work in conjuction with Professor Chu on this project. - · School on Wheels
We'll continue school on wheels. Heather Daugherty still wants to be involved with this project, Joy Feldman has also expressed an interest in staying involved with ALE. - · Legislative Day
Alison will head this project to continue participation in this. Last year Joy obtained a travel grant. - · Website

[link to events page] - ¤ School On Wheels:
Heather gave a brief re-cap of ALE members' efforts to contact and set up outreach programs to area homeless shelters through the School on Wheels program's resource centers. To date, we have been in contact with three shelters, Good Shephard, PATH and the Midnight Mission. Heather has a meeting arranged on April 24 with the Director of the School on Wheels program to discuss their goals and how their vision for the partnership with UCLA students. Joy announced a tentative date for the field trip to the Museum of Tolerance for Sunday, May XX (5th week of classes).[link to events page] - ¤ IS 220 Group - Design of Library and Information Services:
Teresa introduced the IS 220 group that has selected creating an action plan for ALE as their IS 220 project. Members of the group are Teresa, Brent, Jim(?), Zohara Kaye, Jean. They asked about the current structure of ALE, former members and action taken by ALE, goals of the organization, efforts to document and archive their actions, possible partnerships and possible broader political interests and involvement.
In response to these questions group members responded that the current structure is totally democratic, with no governing structure or requirements for membership outside of an interest in the goals as stated in the organization's mission statement. Meeting participants identified a need for more structure than is currently in place, to provide a contact, call meetings, set agendas and facilitate events and efforts by ALE members.
ALE relies upon the interests and efforts of its members to create and organize projects or programs.
When asked, members present indicated that they would be interested in working with or partnering with other student groups on campus or with other IS organizations but felt that it was a secondary goal to creating an internal structure for the organization. - ¤ MoveOn Bake Sale?:
Genvieve Marina asked if members of ALE would be interested in participating in a bake sale for Project MoveOn.org, she will send out a note to the ALE list-serve to follow up with details.[link to events page]
Brent and Zo said the IS 220 group is planning to send out a questionnaire for ALE members and IS students via e-mail and planned to hold focus groups.
No other business was presented. The meeting adjourned at 1:40 p.m.

Heather relayed her experience at Legislation Day last year with a group of UCLA MLIS students. The trip involved meeting with legislators and helped students realize the potential impact of citizens speaking out to support libraries and their programs. The 2003 trip was partially sponsored by the California Library Association's (CLA) FILL program which paid for overnight accommodations.[link to events page] - ¤ Legislative Day 2004?:
For the current year: Library Legislative day is Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in Sacramento. If a group is interested, ALE will arrange for a van through UCLA. Dr. Chu said she would like ALE to consider Counterpoise, an alternative literature review journal as a project, encouraging student to review materials for the journal and possibly help with preparing a strategic plan for the future of the journal, as the editor is nearing retirement age and the journal's future is uncertain. She is also considering counterpoise as an in-service project for her spring quarter "change and diversity" class.
