Museum of Tolerance Tour

ALE, with the sponsorship of ALA and SLA has set up a tour of the Museum of Tolerance. The group tour will begin at 11am on Friday, June 11th. Attendees will tour the museum together along with a guide, as the Museum of Tolerance is designed to be group experience. Following the tour of the museum, we will debrief and relax for a bit over refreshments at the Museum of Tolerance's library. After refreshements the director of library services and archives, Adair Klein, and her staff will field questions regarding the museum and the library. A demonstration of the services of the library and archives will also be part of the experience.

In order to maximize the experience for everyone, this tour will be limited to 20 people. Please e-mail Joy Feldman (jrfeldma@ucla.edu) asap if you are planning on attending this event. If there are more than 20 people interested in attending, Joy will generate a waiting list. Additionally, there will be a $9 fee per person to tour the museum.

Joy writes: "I hope many of you will join us at the Museum of Tolerance. I believe tolerance and understanding is an essential part of our profession. I hope this event will help many of us explore the issues and challenges that may be facing us as we begin our careers as librarian, archvisits and information professionals."

If you would like more information about the Museum of Tolerance or the library and archives, please go to: www.wiesenthal.com/mot/.

MoveOn/ALE Phone Bank Party

Saturday, May 8th, ALE member Alison Kelly and Genevieve Marino hosted a phone bank party run by MoveOn PAC (Political Action Committee).

It was a fun and powerful way to help influence the outcome of the upcoming election. Each party attendee brought their cell phones and was given a list of folks to call and a script for the call.

Participants signed up for phone lists and scripts by visiting: http://action.moveonpac.org/phone/selectmtg.html?event_ids=3314

MoveOn provided instructions for marking responses to some simple, non-confrontational questions. The data will inform MoveOn's get-out-the-vote effort. Campaigns often pay $1 per call or more for calls like these to be made by professional outfits. Volunteers save them money and have fun at the same time.

This party was part of MoveOn's effort to coordinate the biggest one-day voter mobilization effort in American history, during which hundreds of grassroots groups and tens-of-thousands of individuals joined forces.

Together, we contacted over 1 million voters and register over 250,000 folks to vote. We also proved to Republicans and the media that while President Bush may have more money, we have the people-power to win.

Book Review Writing Brown Bag with Dr. John Richardson

On Wednesday, April 28th, UCLA Department of Information Studies' professor, Dr. Richardson, presented valuable information about writing book reviews. He provided an overview of the publishing industry and information about journals that publish book reviews. The former editor of The Library Quarterly also offered advice on how to write publishable reviews and how to break into the world of book review writing. For those interested in writing and publishing professional book reviews, Dr. Richardson suggested that students contact him for more information. PowerPoint slides of the presentation can also be requested (jrichard@ucla.edu). This event was co-sponsored by the UCLA ALA Student Chapter.

Legislative Day for California Libraries

[see photos]

On Wednesday, April 21, 2004, six UCLA MLIS students advocated for libraries alongside professional librarians from throughout California. Librarians gathered in Sacramento for an information session hosted by the California Library Association and California School Library Association. The morning briefing included advice from CLA and CSLA lobbyists on tips for conducting visits with legislators. They also addressed key issues regarding the Public Library Foundation (PLF), the California State Library, and budget cuts affecting public and school libraries across the state.

Thanks to the guidance and mentorship of Billie Frierson, the students were able to meet with Herb J. Wesson, Jr., Speaker Emeritus of the CA State Assembly. The students also met with Wilma Chan, State Assemblyperson for Oakland, CA. The students were impressed by the outreach efforts made by Oakland Public Library, which included members of Anthony Bernier's Youth Leadership Council and other library users, in addition to librarians. Herb Wesson and Wilma Chan are both library supporters! Students also sat in on senate hearings regarding bills on education and health and human services.

Thanks to Kristen Raig and Joy Feldman, transportation, hotel, and registration costs for all students were paid for by the Department of Information Studies' Andrew H. Horn Travel Award. In addition to Kristen and Joy, California Legislative Day attendees included IS students, Myleen de Jesus, April Harmon, and Heather Daugherty, and visiting scholar, ?? Wang. Leg Day participants felt they learned a lot about the legislative process and about advocating for their libraries in the future.

*Where: 3729 Cahuenga Blvd, N. Hollywood

ALL ATTENDEES WILL RECEIVE A VERY COOL COMPLIMENTARY ARCHIVES AUDIO SAMPLER CD & FREE FOOD WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE TOUR.

*INFORMATION ABOUT THE PACIFICA RADIO ARCHIVES:

This unique audio library collects and maintains the historical programs of the Pacifica Radio network, including KPFA in Berkeley and L.A.'s own KPFK. The content of the collection emphasized a common thread of social justice and contains original material from many movements and organizations, including the Civil Rights Movement, the successful re-occupation of Alcatraz Island by Native American activists, and the Black Panther Party's activities during the late 60s. Encompassing more than 50,000 recordings, the Archives features such notable figures as Archbishop Oscar Romero, Che Guevara, Anais Nin, Margaret Mead, Allen Ginsberg, Dr. martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, Pauline Kael, and Noam Chomsky. In addition to these important voices, the Archives also chronicles the activities and programming of the Pacifica Radio network, which over 50 years ago became the first example of listener-sponsored radio in the country. Recently, the Archives has taken on a monumental restoration project, funded in part with grants from the NEA and the Recording Academy, to restore and repair the invaluable recordings in its collection that were all originally captured on fragile reel-to-reel tape and are in a current (and never-ending) state of disintegration.

**There will be a CARPOOL leaving from the GSEIS bldg at approximately 1:30pm. Please e-mail Joy Feldman for more information regarding carpooling.

*INFORMATION ABOUT THE INTERNSHIPS:

The Archives will have several internship opportunities available this coming Spring and Summer Quarter. For those interested and time permitting, interviews can be conducted on the day of the field trip. These internships will involve working, at various levels according to experience, on the restoration project under the direct supervision of the Archives' director and the projects' two MLIS consultants. Call the Archives for more information at 818-506-1077.

Co-sponsored by Activist Librarians and Educators and the Society of American Archivists UCLA Chapter.

School on Wheels Program

This Friday, February 20 at 11:00AM, several ALE members will be meeting with the program coordinator of one of the shelters School On Wheels (SOW) works with. This is an excellent opportunity to find out more about SOW and to get involved in the Learning Room project. To decide if you're interested in helping out, learn more about our School On Wheels program on the projects page. Please email Heather Daugherty if you have any questions or if you'd like to attend Friday's meeting.

Braille Institute Tour

Joy Feldman organized a tour of the Braille Institute on January 5, 2004. The tour allowed students to discover first-hand the many wonderful opportunities that the Braille Institute offers to countless adults and children in southern California who are either blind, or have low-vision. The Braille Institute is an active center that offers a wide variety of services to its users, including classes on painting, sewing, music and much more! The tour included a visit of the Braille presses on site where students were able to witness books being published right on the spot! Also, IS students had the opportunity to take a tour of the Braille Institute's unique library. The library offers a telephone reader program, descriptive videos and millions of talking books. IS students learned that the bulk of the work performed by librarians and library assistants in the library is reader advisory services.

If you would like to schedule a tour yourself, or if you would like to find out more about volunteer opportunities at the Braille Institute, please visit their website: brailleinstitute.org

Field Trip to California Men's Colony Prison Library

December 14, 2001

I went through the donations CMC Library-East received from the UCLA Library students and there were many WONDERFUL additions to the Library-East collection among them. The computer titles were especially welcome, but each title I'm adding to the collection will be useful in providing information and realizing the areas of service to this "controlled" community. Every book has found a "home". Your collecting and transporting efforts were not in vain and we appreciate the thoughtfulness and time expended in out behalf. Thank you. Joan Lienemann

[Manufacturing Consent video cover]

Wednesday May 9, 2001

"An invigorating introduction to one of the least soporific of American minds."
- The New York Times

"WATCH OUT FOR THIS FILM... IT CAN MAKE YOU THINK!"
- Ralph Nader

"MEMORABLE...INVALUABLE"
-The Nation

Please join the UCLA Information Studies Department chapters of American Library Association, American Society of Information Science, and Activist Librarians and Educators, together with Melnitz Movies and the Graduate Students Association for a screening of the highly acclaimed documentary, Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media.

Our mission is to promote awareness of Noam Chomsky's social theories among UCLA's diverse community. Chomsky's insights into the depiction of truth in the media have special significance for students concerned with the characteristics of a multi-ethnic society. We believe that as librarians and information professionals, it is our responsibility to create an environment of discourse and to facilitate evaluation of mainstream society as presented by the corporate media. Please spread the word by telling your classes, friends, posting it on your Web sites, etc.

Mexicali Bibliobus Trip

May 5th, 2000

Climb aboard the bibliobus and head for festive Mexicali with your pals from the Activist Librarians & Educators as they celebrate the 5th of May in high style by giving their ol' van, complete with a windshield full of parking tickets, to the Mexicali Public Library.

This'll be a swell follow-up to your trip to Northridge...ALE promises you a tour of a fine, spirited library that celebrated its silver anniversary last year, an uncomfortable ride across the desert, a possible dip in the Salton Sea, an equally possible interlude in the library of the University of Baja California, and, well, that's about all we can promise you.
